Shaping the future of electrical steels

ArcelorMittal is shaping the future of electrical steels with one of its largest ever investments in Europe, together with a ‘next-generation’ offering of innovative electrical steels for the fast-moving mobility and energy transition markets – all supported by the creation of a new dedicated, multi-disciplinary customer satisfaction team, designed to partner with customers on co-engineering new product developments for them from start to finish.

ArcelorMittal’s electrical steels, specifically non-grain-oriented electrical steels (NGOES), are key drivers in the evolving energy transition, particularly in electric vehicles, generators for data centres and renewables.

We have recently announced that ArcelorMittal France is preparing to launch a new electrical steels production line in Mardyck, – the largest ArcelorMittal investment in Europe in the past 10 years, increasing its electrical steels capacity three-fold from 100,000 to circa 300,000 tonnes per year. Supplied by its upstream Dunkerque and Fos-sur-Mer flat steel plants, this makes by which ArcelorMittal is the only EU steelmaker with the capacity and supply security of two primary and two finishing plants.

With this new unit, which complements the electrical steels existing facility at ArcelorMittal’s Saint-Chély-d’Apcher site in France, ArcelorMittal is expanding its European offering in electrical steels to support the electrification of applications, particularly in the automotive, energy and wider industrial sectors.

“The electrical steels market is set for huge development with the evolving energy transition, and we’re ramping up our offering and structure to deliver the best solutions for our customers. Our new team structure is designed to deliver unparalleled levels of support and collaboration – working with our customers as true partners to help them on their product development journey from pre-development to project ramp-up.”
Eric Vasseur, ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products, Technical & Service Director

ArcelorMittal’s production capacity and reliability, alongside its extensive R&D resources across Europe, differentiate it emphatically in the electrical steels market. The customer satisfaction team’s ability to offer Business Development Support, Customer Technical Support and Service Support all assisted by R&D Product teams, within its technical support offering is unique in the industry and recognised by customers.

As R&D coordinator for the team, my role is to develop the technical solutions for our customers’ future products and applications – often through improved electrical steel grades for the full range of stators and rotors. This means collaborating across the spectrum of our suppliers, R&D labs, production plants, together with the development teams at our customers – the OEMs, motor/generator producers and punchers. At the core of my job is an in-depth understanding of how we can innovate electrical steels – substrates and coatings – to deliver higher energy efficiency and higher torque density in motor/generator products.”
Lode Vandenbossche, R&D coordinator for electrical steels
“As Business Development Engineer, I collaborate closely with our R&D teams and I am the first link between our electrical steel customers - OEMs and e‑motor suppliers - and our internal teams. My mission is to ensure that our innovative electrical steel solutions are considered as early as possible in the design phase of future e‑motors. This upstream involvement is critical to securing optimal technical performance, efficiency, and customer satisfaction for the end-product.”
David Kieffer – Business Development Engineer for electrical steels
“Our new Electrical Steel team structure is designed to maximise responsiveness, technical expertise, and day-to-day engagement and intimacy with our customers to deliver the right technical solutions for them. A deep knowledge of our products and of each customer’s processes is essential to delivering accurate, efficient, and value‑added support. My role is centred on guiding our Customer Technical Support team, driving efficient collaboration across our capabilities. We aim to deliver a win-win collaboration – enhanced customer satisfaction, while achieving continuous improvement across our offering.”
Vincent Eustache, Technical Coordinator for electrical steels
“In my role as Service Support, I make sure our customers feel fully heard by translating their needs into concrete actions, aiming to deliver a tailor-made service that truly meets their expectations. This is based around continuous improvement - I proactively search for opportunities to simplify processes or optimise our workflows that will enhance delivery and solutions for our customers. By combining our efforts across the teams, we react faster, align priorities and maintain a shared commitment to achieve the best possible results.”
